On this episode of Peachjar Extra Credit, Matt was in Frederick, MD and spoke to FC Frederick Director of Coaching, Bo Eskay, to learn about FC Frederick's mission to cultivate talent in a positive environment that challenges each player at their highest level and deliver holistic development for their players.
FC Frederick is a non-profit soccer club committed to the holistic development of soccer athletes. Their mission is to cultivate talent in a positive environment that challenges each player at their highest level. They achieve this through fair and open evaluation, professional administration and coaching, and high-level competition in league and tournament play.
The success of their player development model is evident in their track record. They take pride in having produced over 800 college players, competing in over 40 collegiate conferences nationwide, such as the ACC, A10, Big 10, Big East, Big South, CAA, Ivy League, PAC-12, Patriot League, PSAC, SEC, and Sun Belt. Their athletes have attended 220+ unique colleges in 32 different states. At the high school level, FC Frederick has made a significant impact, with over 1,000 All-Area selections and more than 5,000 players making Varsity and JV rosters. The Club has also produce nearly 400 Olympic Development Program (ODP) players.
"Sports done well is sort of a crucible for society writ large," said FC Frederick Director of Coaching Bo Eskay, "and when I mean done well, I mean a coach that's informed, aware, and able to understand the journey that a player would have from when they're 7 and 8 years old to 18 and 19 years old. There's all sorts of different stages kids go through and what they're ready to receive information-wise varies along that journey. So things like learning to be a leader, learning to be a follower when that's your role, and overcoming adversity. I would love it if all of our teams won all of their games, life would be easy, but of course it's not the case. It's really the losses and the times when things aren't going great that really is the best opportunity to share you know lessons with the kids so that they can take that to wherever they go in life later"
