What Is Summer Learning Loss & How Can It Be Prevented?

Written by Cara Aley | May 30, 2017

We've all heard of the notion of summer learning loss, but what is it exactly?  It is defined as "the loss of academic skills and knowledge over the course of summer holidays. The loss in learning varies across grade level, subject matter, and family income.  A common finding across numerous studies is that, on average, students score lower on standardized tests at the end of the summer than they do at the beginning of summer (on the same test)."  Interestingly, students tend to fall farther behind in reading and math than in other subjects.

But there is hope, and a cure for summer learning loss!  It has been found that this loss can be prevented starting with just 3 hours a week of study- that's less than thirty minutes a day!  That's not much considering the great and positive impact that just thirty minutes can have, and the greater detriment that not spending that thirty minutes productively can have.

So, where can a K-12 parent turn to find productive summer activities for their children, in order to prevent summer learning loss?  Peachjar has designed a site just for that purpose- parents can visit Digital Summer, and find dozens of educational websites and apps, organized by subject, that will keep their K-12 students productively entertained for hours this summer.

Make sure students stay ahead of the curve this summer with Digital Summer, the destination for summer learning online.
