November Engagement Ideas Full of Gratitude

There is so much to be thankful for all year long but in November, we are extra thankful for the school districts and community organizations that we partner with throughout the year to provide resources, support, and fun to families. This time of year often reminds us of the importance of embracing those around us and having fun, too. In light of that, we’re back with more ways to engage your community this month! While it might seem like a shorter one with the Thanksgiving holiday and break, this is a great time to strive to stay connected, offer support, be present in your community, and have fun.

    Daylight Saving Time

In a state that recognizes Daylight Saving Time? On November 6th, it’s time to roll back your clocks! Because we adjust the clocks two times each year, it’s easy to forget why we do it. When you remind parents and guardians to adjust their clocks to stay on their normal schedule, it can be fun to share a little history behind the action, too. This is also a great time to remind families about the importance of switching the batteries in their smoke detectors at home and review household emergency plans as well to ensure they are fully functional. While we all hope these are never necessary, safety and precaution are incredibly important and something that can be discussed as family.

    STEM/STEAM Day

November 8th is National STEM/STEAM Day! Students that learn skills around science, technology, engineering, art, and math boost their rational thinking, critical reasoning, and social and emotional skills. By exploring STEM/STEAM lessons from a young age, students build interests that carry with them to adulthood and their careers after they finish school. One great way to engage in STEM/STEAM learning is through project-based learning. These lessons can be taught in and out of the classroom and can be fun for the whole family. Consider getting ideas from district teachers and creating a challenge for students and families to participate in and highlight them on your district’s social media over the course of the month. You can find other ideas on celebrating STEM/STEAM Day on the Learning Council Website.

    World Kindness Day

World Kindness Day is November 13th and the world can always use more kindness! This is a great opportunity to showcase kindness in your community and also inspire others. You can also challenge families to talk at home about kindness, being kind, and how each individual can help make a difference in the world. Encourage students to focus on kindness with other students, connecting with teaching staff on how this can be part of lesson plans and current classroom activities.

    America Recycles Day

While we’re celebrating kindness to each other, it’s equally important to celebrate kindness to our planet! America Recycles Day is on November 15th. Does your community have a recycling program or center? This is a great chance to highlight that. If someone from your community recycling program is available, work together to create a fun social media video talking about the center and why recycling is important. Sometimes the information about what and how things are recycled can be confusing so this provides an excellent opportunity to come together with a program in your community and educate families so we can all work together for a better tomorrow.

    Thank You

With the holiday season in full swing, there are endless opportunities to create a point of connection with the families that make up your school district. What we have pulled together here is just a small highlight of fun ways to celebrate and acknowledge days during the month but we want to hear what traditions your community has for this time of year, too! Feel free to drop them in the comments so others may take that as inspiration.
