Springing Closer to Summer with May Engagement!

May is filled with activity: from school testing to longer, warmer days, to students antsy to head off to summer break. While school assignments slow down, this is a great time to gear up engagement ideas for summer to keep students and families engaged during their off time. Now is also a great time to begin evaluating what worked in your communications strategy for this past school year, where you had to pivot, and what you’d like to add to the mix for the next school year! Identify the audience and stakeholders and collaborate using the data and goals that you have. The month brings us lots of opportunities to celebrate important members of school staff teams. Teacher Appreciation Week is from May 8 to May 12, so be sure to celebrate your teachers and encourage your students to do the same. Schools wouldn’t be the same without them! Additionally celebrated are School Communicators Day and National School Nurses Day so be sure to give a shout out to your team! 

Celebrating nature and learning outside of the classroom is a great way to keep students engaged over the summer. Love a Tree Day, International Museums Day, World Bee Day, and National Scavenger Hunt Day are celebrated in May but their influence and fun can live all year round. Challenge students and families to talk about the importance of different types of trees or to plant pollinator flowers to encourage bee activity and share the garden’s progress over the summer. While International Museum Day is one day in May, there are thousands of museums around the country and each is unique! Ask families to share their favorite museums on your social media channels as a recommendation to others and challenge families to visit different types of museums over the summer.
